Having an extensive collection of old traditional danceable tango and tango nuevo in their repertoire, they also like to push the borders of traditional tango music by playing contemporary newly written music.

Ville Hiltula:
Ville was born and raised in Finland where he started his musical career with accordion at the age of 9. He studied at the Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki and later performed as an accordion soloist and chamber musician in different countries in Europe. From 2002 to 2006, Ville studied bandoneon and Argentine Tango at The Rotterdam Conservatory`s tango department in the Netherlands, the best Tango school outside Buenos Aires, Argentina.

As a bandoneon player and tango musician Ville has been working actively ever since and collaborated with many world renowned tango artists such as Carel Kraayenhof y su Sexteto Canyengue, Gustavo Beytelmann, Victor Hugo Villena, Orquesta Tipica OTRA, Roberto Alvarez y su Color Tango, Alfredo Marcucci, Sonia Possetti, Alejandro Schwarz, Leonardo Sanchez, Pablo Agri, and also played together with pop groups Blof and Nuspirit Helsinki.

He participated as a soloist in Astor Piazzolla`s tango opera Maria de Buenos Aires, which performed all over Belgium in 2005-2006 together with Musiques Nouvelles ensemble. Ville also worked together with Aurelia Saxophone Quartet and the Argentinean pianist Juan Pablo Dobal in the project called Nuevo Encuentro.

Ville has performed in Buenos Aires, Argentina (VIII Festival de Tango Buenos Aires, Teatro Alvear, Teatro San Martin, Casa del Tango, Congreso National de Buenos Aires, Teatro de la Ribera, Carapachay, Confiteria Ideal, La Viruta), most European countries as well as in Japan and the USA. His music appears on 4 CD’s. www.villehiltula.com

Maho Nabeshima:
Maho received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in piano performance from New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and an Artist Diploma from Carnegie Mellon University.

She served on the faculty of the School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University, Carnegie Mellon University’s preparatory school, the Colburn School of Performing Arts and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music preparatory division.

Maho has given solo and chamber music recitals in Japan, Germany and the United States, with the Essex Symphony Orchestra in Andover, Massachusetts and most recently in the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. She was a featured pianist on the Steinway Society Concert Series in Pittsburgh, PA, the Walden School Concert Series in Dublin, New Hampshire, as well as on the Liszt Gala Concert hosted by the American Liszt Society in San Francisco, CA. She recorded 2 CD’s. www.mahonabeshima.com

About Tango Revolution:
Tango Revolution is a weekly neighborhood project to offer anyone the opportunity to learn and experience the social aspect of Argentine Tango: a dance and music of immigrants which continues to cross the boundaries of race, culture, language and social status. By regularly holding the event free of charge in an accessible café on a Sunday afternoon we encourage the spontaneous inclusion of music and dance in our everyday life as a communal experience. Where both beginning and accomplished dancers and musicians can share the floor without obvious hierarchy.

Part of the project includes giving young musicians from high schools, community music schools, conservatories and universities the opportunity to learn and perform traditional Argentine Tango music as well as Piazzolla’s Nuevo Tango. They receive coaching sessions by professional Tango musicians from Argentina, Europe and the USA, collaborate with guest faculty and professional musicians and perform regularly as a music ensemble at SF’s Community Music Center, Caffe Trieste Downtown and other special events in the Bay Area.

The Tango Revolution project began in 2005 at Café Revolution in SF’s Mission District. Its success has inspired other musical groups such as Classical Revolution to adopt the idea, the name and the practice of making music in accessible places.
Many dancers honed their skills with us and many musicians were introduced to the tango music, since there is no official Tango music school in the Bay Area. Some went on to form their own groups such as the tango quartet Tangonero, which has its origin in the Tango Revolution project.

Tango Revolution is a program of Intimate Embrace Tango, which envisions Argentine Tango as a relational matrix of connection to ourselves, each other and the world. We offer the beautiful connection between human beings in the Tango Embrace as a common ground and antidote against the isolation, separation and fearful existence we are led to believe is necessary. What better way to come home to ourselves and connect with each other across our differences than the non-verbal power of a musical and dance embrace, listening and moving together as one?
www.tangorevolution.blogspot.com – www.IntimateEmbraceTango.com

Tango Revolution Orchestra celebrates its 6th Anniversary

TANGO REVOLUTION 6TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION (2005-2011)

Special guest performers Ville Hiltula (bandoneon) and Maho Nabeshima (piano) join Tango Revolution musicians in a CONCERT of Piazzolla (Nuevo Tango), traditional Argentine Tango and Argentine folk music and as “Orquesta Tipica” in the MILONGA(Tango Dance Party)!

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 6, 2011 from 7pm -12am
SF Community Music Center
544 Capp Street (b/w 20th & 21st Street)
San Francisco, CA 94110

Hosted by Sonja Riket - More info: 415.661.1852
www.tangorevolution.blogspot.com - www.IntimateEmbraceTango.com

Come celebrate Tango Revolution’s 6 years of service to the community with free Tango classes, Milongas and opportunities for young musicians to learn about and perform the Argentine Tango style!

We feel extremely honored that Argentine Tango professionals of such caliber as Ville Hiltula and Maho Nabeshima will join us in this celebration!
With high level artistry and exceptional teaching ability, they have coached the Tango Revolution musicians in an intensive master class leading up to tonight’s collaborative performance in Concert and as “Orquesta Tipica” during the Milonga (Tango Dance Party).

Take an introductory Tango dance lesson with award-winning teacher Sonja Riket (no dance experience or partner necessary), then dance the night away in the intimate atmosphere of the concert hall with balcony, splendid hardwood floors and a beautiful open air patio to catch your breath!

What a treat!!! What better way to come home to ourselves and connect with each other across our differences than the non-verbal power of a musical and dance embrace, listening and moving together as one?
Come watch, listen or join in the dance! All levels and ages are welcome.

Tango Revolution is a program of Intimate Embrace Tango, which envisions Argentine Tango as a relational matrix of connection to ourselves, each other and the world. We organize classes, workshops, Milonga’s, concerts and social awareness-and fundraising events around critical issues of our time.
www.IntimateEmbraceTango.com - 415.661.1852- www.tangorevolution.blogspot.com

FREE WORKSHOP SERIES FOR MUSICIANS AND SINGERS

FOR ALL MUSICIANS, SINGERS, MUSIC FACULTY, COACHES, AND MUSIC THERAPISTS

A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN TOOLS TO FREE YOURSELF FROM TENSION, PAIN AND INJURY AND FIND INNOVATIVE SOURCES FOR EXPRESSION, COMPOSITION AND IMPROVISATION

SF Community Music Center & faculty member Sonja Riket present a series of FREE educational workshops on the relationship of movement to music making/singing for creative expression and injury prevention/rehabilitation with special guest faculty Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, founder of the groundbreaking, innovative Body-Mind Centering Method® of somatic education.

Human movement is a fundamental dimension of the musical experience.
In this series of free workshops spread over the year 2011, we will explore movement as a crucial element in music making:
-As a modality for expressive possibilities, as a tool for injury
prevention/rehabilitation, to embody music in a healthy, dynamic structure.
-How to use the body effectively to produce high quality musical performances
-How human developmental movement patterns: homologous, homo-lateral, contra-lateral are foundational elements of musical organization
-To improve breathing, tone, coordination, strength and technical proficiency

** Workshops will be taught by Sonja Riket, CMC faculty and Body-Mind Centering® and Feldenkrais® Teacher. BODY AWARENESSIS A CRUCIAL ELEMENT IN MY ART; IT IS THE TOOL THROUGH WHICH I CAN REALIZE MY MUSICAL INTENTIONS. WITHOUT IT, I WOULD BE PRONE TO INJURY; WITH IT, I HAVE ACCESS TO A TREASURE-TROVE OF ARTISTIC POSSIBILITIES. I LIKE TO WORK WITH THE BODY SYSTEMS AS A STIMULUS FOR GENERATING NEW INTERPRETATIONS, AND I HAVE ESPECIALLY ENJOYED BONNIE BAINBRIDGE COHEN’S WORK CONNECTING THE SCAPULA TO THE FINGERS. AMAZINGLY, THAT WORK CORRELATES BEAUTIFULLY WITH CHOPIN’S IDEAS ABOUT PIANO PLAYING. BEING GROUNDED IN MY BODY ALLOWS ME TO BE EXPRESSIVE IN MY SOUL.”
-MONICA JAKUC LEVERETT
ELSIE IRWIN SWEENEY PROFESSOR EMERITA OF MUSIC
SMITH COLLEGE, NORTHAMPTON, MA

“WORKING WITH SONJA RIKET, HAS BEEN A TREMENDOUSLY REWARDING EXPERIENCE. HER
TEACHING, WHICH GRACEFULLY BLENDS THE SOMATIC METHOD OF BODY-MIND CENTERING® WITH ELEMENTS OF THE FELDENKRAIS METHOD®, HAS BEGUN TO INTEGRATE WITHIN ME A LEVEL OF DYNAMIC BODY BALANCE AND AWARENESS WHICH I HAD NEVER KNOWN EXISTED, AND WHICH I AM
CONVINCED CAN GREATLY BENEFIT ANY MUSIC STUDENT, TEACHER, OR PROFESSIONAL PERFORMER. I AM FINDING MYSELF PLAYING WITH MORE FLUIDITY, EASE, AND COMFORT THAN EVER BEFORE, AND CAN FINALLY BEGIN TO LOOK BEYOND MY HISTORY OF MUSIC RELATED INJURIES TOWARD AN OPTIMISTIC FUTURE PREVIOUSLY DIFFICULT TO IMAGINE. BUT FAR MORE THAN JUST INJURY
PREVENTION, SONJA’S “CULTIVATING CREATIVE EXPRESSION” COURSE AT SF’S COMMUNITY MUSIC CENTER OPENS UP CREATIVE AND PHYSICAL RESOURCES WHICH CAN POSITIVELY AFFECT NEARLY EVERY ASPECT OF ONE’S LIFE. THIS FOR ME HAS BEEN A VERY POWERFUL HEALING EXPERIENCE, RESTORING MOBILITY TO MY PLAYING (53 YEARS OF MOVING NOTES ON A SAXOPHONE) AND
GENERALLY IMPROVING MY QUALITY OF LIFE AS I DEAL WITH AGE RELATED ISSUES AND PAST INJURIES. By holding the event free of charge in an accessible café on a Sunday afternoon we encourage the spontaneous inclusion of music and dance in our everyday life as a communal experience.

Part of the project includes giving young musicians the opportunity to learn and perform traditional Argentine Tango music as well as Piazzolla’s Nuevo Tango. They receive coaching sessions by professional Tango musicians from Argentina and the USA and perform regularly at Caffe Trieste Downtown and other special events in the Bay Area.

The Tango Revolution project began in 2005 at Café Revolution in SF’s Mission District. Its success has inspired other musical groups such as Classical Revolution to adopt the idea, the name and the practice. The Tango quartet Tangonero has its origins at Tango Revolution as well as several other musicians now playing Tango in the Bay Area.

Tango Revolution is a program of Intimate Embrace Tango, which envisions Argentine Tango as a relational matrix of connection to ourselves, each other and the world. He is known for his uncommon talent as a singer, a career which he began at the age of six, a tango dancer, and an artist who “possesses a unique spirit and is a virtuoso extraordinaire on the violin” (Wynton Marsalis, Artistic Director Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York) Leonardo’s mother Beatriz Suarez Paz, a leading tango singer in Buenos Aires, has passed along to Leonardo his vocal passion and talent. “Suarez Paz’s father, a brilliant tango violinist, had been one of Piazzolla’s principal collaborators, and from the first bar it was clear that the father and the son were made of the same stuff” (“Flying High,” JAZZIZ Magazine by Alexander Gelfand, Music Critic Cuartetango in Birdland, New York.)

By the time he was 14, Leonardo was playing and touring with tango orchestras and was the only young, teenage member of the last Horacio Salgan orchestra, in which each musician was a tango star. He is the only violinist of his generation who played with most of the great directors of the Golden Age as a violin soloist. He was also influenced by the Nuevo Tango, thus carrying the torch that was handed down from Astor Piazzolla to his father and to him, “Leonardo plays with the same intense passion and clarity heard a generation ago on his father's recordings.” (Barnes & Noble, Music Review February 2004)

In Buenos Aires, he brought together the best in tango and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, who has also commissioned tango arrangements from Leonardo Suarez Paz. An EMI Classics artist, violinist, arranger and composer, Leonardo’s experience as a classical musician is part of the legacy, which makes him a leading tango violinist today.
Throughout his intense career, he has performed and recorded with a bouquet of international stars enhancing the productions of Placido Domingo (“Mariachi” Capitol Records 2000), American jazz legend Stanley Jordan (“My Favorite Things” TCB Records 2002), Latin star Luis Miguel (“Amarte es un Placer,” EMI 1999), and Carlos Franzetti’s (“The Jazz Kamerata”/“Tango Bar” Chesky Records). One can hear the sound of his tango violin in motion pictures Bossa Nova, Imposters and Flawless with Robert DeNiro. In 2009 and 2010 he toured throughout Brasil, China, Korea and Singapore with the show Café de Los Maestros, dedicated to the legends of tango.

Leonardo has performed with the tango shows Tangox2 , Forever Tango and Tango Argentino on Broadway.
Leonardo directs Cuartetango String Quartet, who’s latest album L’Atelier was released by EMI Classics. His Cuartetango Music & Dance Company and Romance de Tango shows were featured on an Emmy-winning program, “Rhythm and Roots,” which is currently airing in the US, Europe and the Middle East. http://www.ebru.tv/en/genres/ArtsLiterature/rhythm-and-roots/episodes/2/206-Cuartetango
For more info please visit: www.leonardosuarezpaz.com - www.suarezpazdance.com

BLUE TANGO

A World Tango fusion concert and dance celebration in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month by Argentine singer/guitarist Maria Volonte and Kevin Footer on harmonica.

Friday, September 10, 2010
8pm - midnight
$15/$10 (students/seniors)

Community Music Center – Concert Hall
544 Capp St. (between 20th&21st Streets, Mission&So.Van Ness)
San Francisco, CA 94110
415.647.6015 - www.sfcmc.org

Event Schedule
8-8:30pm World Tango Fusion Concert with Maria Volonte (vocals, guitar) and Kevin Footer (harmonica)
8:45-9:30pm Introductory Tango dance lesson with Sonja Riket (no partner or dance experience necessary)
9:30pm Tango dance party (Milonga) starts
10:15-11pm Live music set for Tango social dancing by Maria Volonte and Kevin Footer with guest Darren Morgan on cajon.
11pm Milonga continues till 12 am.

For more info, please call: Sonja Riket 415.661.1852 – intimate_embrace_tango@earthlink.net www.IntimateEmbraceTango.com

Argentine singer/songwriter Maria Volonte is a Latin Grammy nominee, Gardel Prize winner (Argentina’s Grammy) and member of the Tango Hall of Fame who combines a love of her Argentine roots with an absolutely personal approach to making music – result of a life lived intensely as a woman and as an artist – that has fascinated critics and audiences around the world.
Maria returns to the US following her recent tours of Argentina and Europe bringing with her all the passion and sensuality of her native Buenos Aires.
They receive coaching sessions by professional Tango musicians from Argentina and the USA and perform regularly at Caffe Trieste Downtown and other events in the Bay Area.
The Tango Revolution project began in 2005 at Café Revolution in SF’s Mission District. Its success has inspired other groups such as Classical Revolution to adopt the idea, the name and the practice nationwide.

We envision Tango Revolution as a fertile ground for learning about Argentine Tango, a dance and music of immigrants, which continues to cross the boundaries of race, culture, language and social status. Where both beginning and accomplished dancers and musicians can share the floor without obvious hierarchy.

Tango Revolution is a program of Intimate Embrace Tango, which envisions Argentine Tango as a relational matrix of connection to ourselves, each other and the world. We organize classes, workshops, Milonga’s, concerts and social awareness-and fundraising events around critical issues of our time.
www.IntimateEmbraceTango.com - 415.661.1852

International Tango harmonica/piano duo Joe Powers and Naoko Aoki returns to Bay Area to celebrate Tango's world heritage status!

2 different events on Saturday-Sunday February 20-21, 2010!

On September 30, 2009 UNESCO, the United Nations cultural organization declared Argentine Tango a part of the world’s cultural heritage. Its repertoire of tangos, waltzes and milongas evokes the flavor of black-and-white movies and steamy dance halls.

In Paris, the native city of Odile Lavault, tango has been very important since 1912. Traveling Argentine musicians inspired local bands. It became common for French accordion players to play bandoneon as well. Lavault is continuing this tradition

Pianist Marco Casasola brings his youthful energy to assure the rhythmic foundation of the trio. Casasola grew up surrounded by tango music and figured out rapidly how to mix his passion for jazz with his relatives’ favorite tangos.

PARLOR TANGO has performed for ODC Theater, the Navarete/ Kajiyama+ Dance Company, and tango dancers all over Northern California. PARLOR TANGO has one CD “Live at Anna’s”.

Tonight Odile and Marco will perform as a bandoneon/piano duo.
http://www.myspace.com/parlortango

Tango Revolution celebrates presidential inauguration with Live band Tango No.9 on Sunday January 25 from 6-10pm

Come celebrate the inauguration of our new president with a special event at Tango Revolution this Sunday January 25 from 6-10pm.

We are pleased to present the live Tango band Tango No.9 www.tangonumber9.com at our weekly Sunday Milonga.

Tango Revolution continues its mission of service to the community by providing free music, dance and other cultural events accessible to all.
Bring your friends and family of all ages for listening as well as dancing to the band.
Typically our audience members range from a few months old to 101 years young!
More info: 415.661.1852

TANGO No.9
SUNDAY JANUARY 25 from 6-10pm
CAFFE TRIESTE: 1667 Market Street @ Gough in SF

6-7pm Basic Introductory Tango dance class by Sonja Riket
7:30-9:30pm: Live music by Tango nr.9 with open floor dancing
Continued Milonga till 10pm.

The event is FREE with food and drink at the caffe.
Donations for the artists are welcomed.

ABOUT TANGO No.9
Tango No.9 is an all-star Bay Area ensemble united in a love for a famously elusive non-native art form. Since 1998, the group has delved deeply into the wrold of Tango, playing countless concerts and milongas, collaborating with many of the top dancers on the west coast, and recording two critically acclaimed albums - the all-Piazolla "All them cats in Recoleta" (lauded by JazzIz Magazine as one of the best modern tango CD's of 2002) and 2006's exploration of early tango, "Radio Valencia."

The quartet is Joshua Raoul Brody on piano, Isabel Douglas on accordeon & bandoneon, Greg Stephens on trombone and bandleader Catherine Clune on violin.
With this unique instrumentation, Tango No.9 embraces both a reverence to tango's seductive past and an innovative vision of the music's storied future.

ABOUT TANGO REVOLUTION:
Tango Revolution is a weekly neighborhood educational project to offer anyone the opportunity to learn and experience the social aspect of Argentine Tango dance, music and history. By holding the event in an accessible café on a Sunday afternoon we encourage the spontaneous inclusion of music and dance in our everyday life as a communal experience.

Tango Revolution is a program of Intimate Embrace Tango, which envisions Argentine Tango as a relational matrix of connection to ourselves, each other and the world. We organize classes, workshops, cultural, awareness-and fundraising events around social issues of our time.

We hope that Tango Revolution is a fertile ground for learning about Argentine Tango, a dance and music of immigrants, which continues to cross the boundaries of race, culture, language and social status. Where both beginning and accomplished dancers and musicians can share the floor without obvious hierarchy. Where all gender pairings are encouraged and anyone may ask anyone to dance.

We offer the beautiful connection between human beings in the Tango Embrace as a common ground and antidote against the isolation, separation and fearful existence we are led to believe is necessary. Her original two-and-a-half month tango vacation turns into an indefinite stay as Camille connects with an inner peace that’s eluded her for ages. As she delves into the seemingly unconnected but in fact quite parallel practices of tango and Zen, she learns that her fierceness and patience can exist in harmony.

Camille Cusumano, an editor at VIA Magazine in San Francisco for seventeen years, has written for many publications including Islands, Country Living, Yoga Journal, and others. She is the author of The Last Cannoli, and the editor of the Seal Press Love Story anthologies. When not on an adventure elsewhere in the world, she lives in San Francisco, where she practices tango and Zen.

Praise for Tango
***Tango is a remarkable addition to contemporary dharma literature. It reads like a thriller, a romance, and above all it shows the redemptive potential of a sincere spiritual practice.”
—Sylvia Boorstein, PhD, author of Happiness Is an Inside Job

***Camille Cusumano has lived out many a mid-life woman’s fantasy: packing her bags, slit skirts, and tango shoes and spending a year in Argentina. The result is a memoir that is like the dance itself: smooth, absorbing, and erotically charged.”
—Laura Fraser, author of An Italian Affair

***The transformative power of the tango embrace beautifully captured. Bravo!”
—Marina Palmer, author of Kiss & Tango

ABOUT TANGO REVOLUTION:
Tango Revolution is a weekly neighborhood educational project to offer anyone the opportunity to learn and experience the social aspect of Argentine Tango dance, music and history. But Chance's End, led by classically-trained San Francisco violinist Ryan Avery, is about to change that. Influenced by artists such as Groove Armada, Gotan Project, and Vanessa-Mae, Chance's End is fusing solo violin with electronic music, bringing the instrument well into the 21st century.

Ryan formed Chance's End in the summer of 2000 in his hometown of Boulder, Colorado before moving to San Francisco, California where he collaborates with Tango Revolution events. His sound is built around acoustic and electric violin, infused with strong melodic hooks, and polished with a thick sonic texture of breakbeat electronica. With Chance's End new album "The Outsider", the violin stands front and center of a gorgeous downtempo electronica landscape, creating a unique web of lush melodies and electronic beats.
His new album once again brings violin electronica to the masses, and its unique style is bound to turn some heads.

Tango Revolution is a weekly neighborhood educational project to offer anyone the opportunity to learn and experience the social aspect of Argentine Tango dance, music and history. During National Dance Week over 70 people visited each event.
Great performances and presentations were offered and we heard wonderful feedback from people. What touched me the most was to see so many happy faces and feel such good energy! We thank everyone for their presence and participation.

For Mother's Day we have another beautiful event planned. Bring your mom, grandma and especially any woman you know who is planning to become a mother.

This Sunday's event is a benefit for Christina Ladas, a Tango teacher/dancer in our Bay Area community who was taken to the hospital with an acute kidney disease. All proceeds of the event will go towards her healthcare fund. Please, if you can, be generous with your donations at the door.

To continue to keep things going smoothly, we need more volunteer help. Please let me know if you can help out tomorrow and/or during future events.
We can use your help for:
*taking the donations at the door
*helping out behind the bar
*someone with good ears who can listen to the doorbell and press the buzzer during the evening.
*set-up before the event and organization after the event
Of course there can be a rotatation so that everyone has a chance to dance and enjoy the event.

MOTHER'S DAY at TANGO REVOLUTION!

WHEN: SUNDAY MAY 13 from 5 - 10 PM

WHERE: STATION 40

3030B - 16th Str.
