Join us to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the monthly CMC Mission Milonga with a very special historic event! For the first time ever in the San Francisco Bay Area, guitarists Hernan Reinaudo (Buenos Aires) and Scott O'Day (Oakland) will host a live Peña.
Tango singers throughout the Bay Area have been invited to take part in what is a historic moment, the first of ongoing public re-creations of the classic peñas of Spain and South America, right here in San Francisco.
A peña is a meeting place of a group of musicians. In Buenos Aires, it is commonly associated with singers and guitarists coming together to share in a particular form of tango called tango canción, or tango song. Commonly heard at peñas are songs made famous by Carlos Gardel, Ignacio Corsini and others. In other words, an exposition of tango music rarely heard at the milonga, but just as vital to its history.

SCHEDULE:

8-9pm: All level dance class with guest teachers Maxi Copello and Raquel Makow: Essential Close Embrace Sequences.

9pm-12am: Milonga with DJ Asvin and 2 sets of Live Music Pena with guests Hernan Reinaudo (BsAs) and Scott O’Day (Oakland) - guitars and many singers!

Entrance at door: $20 general/$15 seniors & FT students with ID for Live music Milonga only.
Add $5 for pre-Milonga Class.

Enjoy dancing in the beautiful Victorian concert hall with smooth wooden floor and outdoor patio! Come to listen and watch on the balcony or join in the dance. All ages are welcome!
Please, bring food and beverages to celebrate!
This is a fragrance-free event.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Hernán Reinaudo is one of the most outstanding guitarists of the new generation of tango musicians that has emerged over the last years in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has accompanied renowned Argentine singers including Susana Rinaldi, Ariel Ardit, Alberto Podestá, and Soledad Villamil among many others. Reinaudo was awarded the Clarín and nominated twice for the award Carlos Gardel for best tango group. He has performed with 34 Puñaladas and Hugo Rivas Quartet, and has also toured throughout America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. With more than 40 album productions under his belt, Reinaudo and his quintet recently released a new album, Neocriollo, which won first prize in the category Best New Work given by the National Foundation of Arts of Argentina. Since 2014, he has toured the U.S. in concerts, as well as conducted workshops and classes. www.hernanreinaudo.com
Scott O’Day is a local Bay Area favorite for tango music, appearing regularly in concert and at the milonga. He attended La Escuela de Música Popular de Avellaneda, a tango music school in Buenos Aires, and has performed with several tango groups all around the U.S., Canada, and Argentina to popular acclaim. Currently, O’Day is also the instructor for the Community Music Center Tango Ensemble in San Francisco. www.scottoday.com
Maxi Copello was born breathing Tango. In his childhood he would accompany his father Carlos Copello to the theater, seated in the lighting booth watching each show with awe and admiration. At one point in his life, the curiosity or his genes won him over and Tango became his biggest passion. Since then he has directed and acted in Tango movies and has traveled the world teaching and dancing tango.
Raquel Makow born in San Francisco, California with a father from Buenos Aires and a mother from New York, began dancing at 10 years old. Dance was always something natural and essential in her life. She went on to win international titles in Ballroom competitions and danced in well-known Ballroom shows in different theaters throughout the world. However, it was at the age of 15 that she discovered her true passion in Tango and later on in 2013 that she moved to Buenos Aires to pursue her new dream.

More info on the artists:

Emilio Solla
Grammy Nominated Argentina born and NY based pianist & composer Emilio Solla got his degree in Classical Piano at the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires and his MA in Jazz Composition at Queens College in New York. He continued to study composition, arranging, counterpoint, improvisation and conducting in Buenos Aires, Barcelona and New York.

His first band, Apertura, was praised by Astor Piazzolla himself as one of the most interesting new sounds in the Buenos Aires scene in 1986. Nowadays, with seven CDs as band leader (Fresh Sound Records) and more than forty as arranger/producer, he is considered by peers and critics to be one of the most outstanding and personal voices in this musical stream, a fusion of modern Argentine tango and folk with jazz and other contemporary music styles (generally referred to as “Tango-Jazz”). He has performed all around Europe, Japan, the US and Latin America to raving reviews in many of the most important Jazz houses and Festivals (Bim Huis, Lincoln Center, Marciac, Blue Note, Fasching).

Solla moved to Barcelona in 1996, and to New York in 2006, always in search of personal and artistic growth. Since in New York, he has composed for, arranged for and performed with Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo O’Farrill, Edmar Castañeda, Pablo Aslan, Cristina Pato and many others, besides performing with his quintet Bien Sur! in town at the Jazz Standard, Dizzie’s and Smalls, featuring saxophonist Chris Cheek. Former members of this band include Donny Mc Caslin and Jeff Ballard. This quintet has released its first CD, Bien Sur! (Fresh Sound, 2010), with special guest Billy Hart, included in the Best of 2010 list by Downbeat Magazine.

He continues to tour Europe with Emilio Solla & Afines, his Barcelona’s based quintet, while working as a free-lance arranger and pianist in different projects in NY. Since November 2010, he is leading a nine piece orchestra, La Inestable de Brooklyn, featuring some of the strongest jazz players in NYC (John Ellis, Ryan Keberle) whose first CD, Second Half (2014) has been Nominated for a 2015 Grammy Award as Best Latin Jazz Album. In November 2014 Solla’s first symphonic work had its World Premiere at the Palau de la Musica, during the Barcelona Jazz Festival, with concerts at the Chicago Symphony Hall and Rutgers University in 2015. 2016 will bring him back to Buenos Aires for the Premiere of the orchestral version of his Suite Piazzollana.

He has a long background as educator as well, having taught regularly in different conservatories in Argentina and Spain. He is currently a Faculty Member at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and has given clinics in Jazz Composition at Emory University, Bates College, Gotemburg Music School (Sweden), Jazz & Pop Conservatory (Helsinki, Finland)

Seth Asarnow, a native of the Bay Area, has a repertory consisting of hundreds of tangos. He can be heard on recordings that range in style from traditional tango to pop. Mr. Asarnow has both composed film scores and played on film soundtracks, and he works regularly with some of the finest tango dancers in the world. Highlights of his performances include Piazzolla’s Four Seasons with Donald Runnicles and members of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, as well as concerts with Symphony Silicon Valley, and the Santa Cruz and San Jose chamber orchestras. He recently appeared on NBC's Dancing with the Stars, performing with the cast of the Broadway show Forever Tango. Mr. Asarnow is also the bandoneónist and musical director of the show Tango Adamor, the Los Angeles Tango Festival, and Nora's Tango Week, an annual international conference for the instruction and celebration of tango, now in its sixteenth year in the Bay Area. He also directs and performs often with his Sexteto Tipico, one of the few authentic traditional tango groups in the United States.
Seth Asarnow’s musical influences include Aníbal Troilo, Leopoldo Federico, and Astor Piazzolla, whom he met in 1989. He continues to promote the tango locally, teaching bandoneón and playing both public and private engagements. He made his San Francisco Symphony debut in 2007.

As part of the World Dance Hall program, Ashkenaz and in house Tango Teacher Sonja Riket pair up to host a monthly Milonga every 2nd (sometimes 3rd) Sunday of the month.
Tango Revelation Milonga is a social Argentine Tango dance gathering. It is led by award-winning Tango teacher Sonja Riket, who teaches at Ashkenaz since 2008. This Milonga series includes a dance class, dance performances and live music by local and international Tango guest artists. Argentine Tango was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Montevideo, Uruguay in the late 1880’s as a dance and music of immigrants. Grown into a worldwide phenomenon, it continues to cross the boundaries of race, culture, language and social status. It encourages the spontaneous inclusion of music and dance in our everyday life as a communal experience.
In 2017, this event evolves out of the “Tango Revolution” Milonga, which began in 2005 at Café Revolution in SF’s Mission District , then found a home at Café Trieste Downtown SF from 2007-2012 (with the Tango Revolution Orchestra) and at Berkeley’s Café Mediterraneum from 2012-2016. With a slight change of name to “Tango Revelation”, we continue to envision Argentine Tango as a relational matrix of connection to ourselves, each other and our world.
We offer the beautiful connection between human beings in the Tango Embrace as a common language and antidote against the isolation, separation and fearful existence we are led to believe is necessary. To complement our screen-oriented lives, we need to slow down, rediscover the joy of body-based expressions and create live gathering places among ourselves in a spirit of harmony and well-being! What better way to come home to ourselves and connect with each other across our differences than the non-verbal power of a music and dance embrace, listening and moving together as one? Come find out what Tango can reveal to you!

Ashkenaz is always all ages.
The café offers beer, wine and a vegetarian menu.

More info on the artists:
Lorena González Cattáneo and Gaston Camejo are originally from Uruguay.
Since 2006 Lorena devoted herself to several dance disciplines such as jazz, belly dance, flamenco, salsa. Her strongest background is the fact that she worked in traditional multicultural tango places or "Casas de tango" in Uruguay, where the past and present of the tango from Montevideo mix and remain intact.
Since 2012 she trained with many Tango masters in Buenos Aires and in 2014 wins the World Tango championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Gaston Camejo danced with the National Folkloric Ballet of Uruguay. In 2013 he met Lorena and moves to Buenos Aires. Since 2015 they merged their artistic careers, something they have dreamed of since long ago and begin together to bring the tango around the world.
They constantly strive to accomplish tango that does not just refer to its technical side, but that conveys artistic achievement beyond the movement.

BIO ALEJANDRO ZIEGLER TANGO QUARTET
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Alejandro Ziegler is a pianist and composer who wrote several chamber and orchestral music works.
At the "Universidad Católica Argentina” he studied orchestral conducting and graduated with a degree in composition. In 2018 Alejandro Ziegler will take up professorship in “Argentine Tango History and Analysis” at this same university.

He was selected when performing in auditions to join the "Orquesta Escuela de Tango", an orchestra supported by the Buenos Aires City Government. There he performed for over two years under famous conductors Emilio Balcarce and Nestor Marconi.

Since 2008 "Alejandro Ziegler Tango Quartet" has developed its own unique style of tango music reflecting both innovation and tradition. Inspired by the golden age tango orchestras, the ensemble creates an evolutionary synthesis of traditional tango and contemporary feeling. Alejandro Ziegler's own compositions come alive through surprising arrangements as well as intimate interplay.
With their special sound, a unique mix of tango, improvisation and romanticism, the musicians of the Alejandro Ziegler Tango Quartet have gained territory all over the world. Their focused performances are complete acoustic, dynamic, and musical masterpieces one should never miss!

Between 2009-2015, the Alejandro Ziegler Tango Quartet has embarked on 6 European tours with 175 concerts in 84 cities around Europe and 4 North American Tours with 86 concerts in 50 cities around USA and Canada.
Alejandro Ziegler has given master classes, lectures and workshops on tango musicality and tango history in many universities and educational centers around the world.

In 2012 SF Community Music Center’s faculty Sonja Riket hosted Alejandro Ziegler Quartet for its first concert in the SF Bay Area. Since then she organized 3 Alejandro Ziegler Tango festivals in 2013, 2014 and 2015 in SF Bay Area.
