They will be joined by Betty Wong, piano faculty at CMC.

ABOUT TANGO REVOLUTION:
Tango Revolution is a weekly neighborhood educational project to offer anyone the opportunity to learn and experience the social aspect of Argentine Tango dance, music and history. By holding the event free of charge in an accessible café on a Sunday afternoon we encourage the spontaneous inclusion of music and dance in our everyday life as a communal experience.
Part of the project includes giving young musicians the opportunity to learn and perform traditional Argentine Tango music as well as Piazzolla’s Nuevo Tango. They receive coaching sessions by professional Tango musicians from Argentina and the USA and perform regularly at Caffe Trieste Downtown and other events in the Bay Area.
The Tango Revolution project began in 2005 at Café Revolution in SF’s Mission District. Its success has inspired other groups such as Classical Revolution to adopt the idea, the name and the practice nationwide.
We envision Tango Revolution as a fertile ground for learning about Argentine Tango, a dance and music of immigrants, which continues to cross the boundaries of race, culture, language and social status. Where both beginning and accomplished dancers and musicians can share the floor without obvious hierarchy.
We offer the beautiful connection between human beings in the Tango Embrace as a common ground and antidote against the isolation, separation and fearful existence we are led to believe is necessary. What better way to come home to ourselves and connect with each other across our differences than the non-verbal power of a musical and dance embrace, listening and moving together as one?
Tango Revolution is a program of Intimate Embrace Tango, which envisions Argentine Tango as a relational matrix of connection to ourselves, each other and the world. We organize classes, workshops, Milonga’s, concerts and social awareness-and fundraising events around critical issues of our time.

International Tango harmonica/piano duo Joe Powers and Naoko Aoki returns to Bay Area to celebrate Tango's world heritage status!

On September 30, 2009 UNESCO, the United Nations cultural organization declared Argentine Tango a part of the world’s cultural heritage. "Tango conquered a long time ago a universal transcendence," UNESCO declared in a statement and added that the dance "embodies and encourages diversity and cultural dialogue."
After last Augusts’ sold out SF event, international Tango harmonica/piano duo Joe Powers and Naoko Aoki returns to the Bay Area for a celebration in style!
Their week-end performances will feature a traditional Argentine Tango concert and Milonga and a Tango/blues fusion happening in honour of Black History Month and the common roots of these musical genres.

Joe Powers:
Harmonica virtuoso, Joe Powers is one of the few Harmonica players in the world to specialize in Tango Music. He was winner of the Belgian Crystal Harmonica Award in the Classical Division (2008) and received 4th place in Jazz Diatonic, at the World Harmonica Championship in Germany (2005). Since then he has performed at Tango festivals and events throughout North and South America, Europe, and Japan collaborating with top Tango maestros including: Emilio de la Peña, Raul Luzzi, and Koji Kyotani. He has shared the stage with top Tango artists such as: NarcoTango, ColorTango, and "Gotan Project" singer, Veronika Silva and has performed with groups as diverse as Pink Martini, British Pop Icon Jamie Cullum, and Smooth Jazz Pioneer Tom Grant. His CD, "Amor de Tango" was recorded in Buenos Aires in 2007 and features members of the famed Leopoldo Federico Tango Orchestra, including Latin Grammy Nominee, Nicolas Ledesma on Piano. In addition she served as the principal pianist for over two years at the only Tango Orchestra School in the world, "La Orquesta Escuela", in Buenos Aires, under the direction of famed Tango maestro, Emilio Balcarce. Today she is considered by many to be the top Tango pianist living in Japan. Her Tango Ensemble, "Orquesta Aurora", which she composes and arranges for features some of the country's finest Tango talents. She travels nearly every year to Argentina and beyond for performances. The events of Aug 6-9, 1946 (nuclear bombing of Hiroshima/Nagasaki, Japan) may have left a bitter taste in the world’s collective mouth, but this year Japanese pianist Naoko Aoki and US harmonica phenomenon Joe Powers intend to bring us a different message. Their friendship and musical partnership are a great example of how the power of the arts can bridge differences between two very distinct cultures.
Joe Powers, the only Tango harmonica artist in the US, is well known for his unique and soulful blend of jazz, tango and blues. When traveling to Buenos Aires, to record his first Tango CD, he met Japan’s top Tango pianist Naoko Aoki. Take a class with Sonja and witness the burgeoning of the SF Tango Youth Project: a collaboration between young musicians from high schools and conservatories with mature expert musicians under direction of Jeremy Cohen of Quartet San Francisco.

PARLOR TANGO is a trio dedicated to Argentine tango music composed, mostly, between 1910 and 1950. Its repertoire of tangos, waltzes and milongas evokes the flavor of black-and-white movies and steamy dance halls.
In Paris, the native city of Odile Lavault, tango has been very important since 1912. Traveling Argentine musicians inspired local bands. It became common for French accordion players to play bandoneon as well. Lavault is continuing this tradition
Pianist Marco Casasola brings his youthful energy to assure the rhythmic foundation of the trio. Casasola grew up surrounded by tango music and figured out rapidly how to mix his passion for jazz with his relatives’ favorite tangos.
PARLOR TANGO has performed for ODC Theater, the Navarete/ Kajiyama+ Dance Company, and tango dancers all over Northern California. PARLOR TANGO has one CD “Live at Anna’s”.
Tonight Odile and Marco will perform as a bandoneon/piano duo.

Tango Revolution celebrates presidential inauguration with Live band Tango No.9 on Sunday January 25 from 6-10pm
Come celebrate the inauguration of our new president with a special event at Tango Revolution this Sunday January 25 from 6-10pm.
We are pleased to present the live Tango band Tango No.9 www.tangonumber9.com at our weekly Sunday Milonga.
Tango Revolution continues its mission of service to the community by providing free music, dance and other cultural events accessible to all.
Bring your friends and family of all ages for listening as well as dancing to the band.

Tango No.9 is an all-star Bay Area ensemble united in a love for a famously elusive non-native art form. Since 1998, the group has delved deeply into the wrold of Tango, playing countless concerts and milongas, collaborating with many of the top dancers on the west coast, and recording two critically acclaimed albums - the all-Piazolla "All them cats in Recoleta" (lauded by JazzIz Magazine as one of the best modern tango CD's of 2002) and 2006's exploration of early tango, "Radio Valencia."
The quartet is Joshua Raoul Brody on piano, Isabel Douglas on accordeon & bandoneon, Greg Stephens on trombone and bandleader Catherine Clune on violin.
With this unique instrumentation, Tango No.9 embraces both a reverence to tango's seductive past and an innovative vision of the music's storied future.

Tango Revolution is a weekly neighborhood educational project to offer anyone the opportunity to learn and experience the social aspect of Argentine Tango dance, music and history. By holding the event in an accessible café on a Sunday afternoon we encourage the spontaneous inclusion of music and dance in our everyday life as a communal experience.
Tango Revolution is a program of Intimate Embrace Tango, which envisions Argentine Tango as a relational matrix of connection to ourselves, each other and the world. We organize classes, workshops, cultural, awareness-and fundraising events around social issues of our time.
We hope that Tango Revolution is a fertile ground for learning about Argentine Tango, a dance and music of immigrants, which continues to cross the boundaries of race, culture, language and social status. Where both beginning and accomplished dancers and musicians can share the floor without obvious hierarchy. Where all gender pairings are encouraged and anyone may ask anyone to dance.
We offer the beautiful connection between human beings in the Tango Embrace as a common ground and antidote against the isolation, separation and fearful existence we are led to believe is necessary. What better way to come home to ourselves and to connect with each other across our differences than the non-verbal power of a musical and dance embrace, listening and moving together as one?
Come watch, listen or join in the dance! All levels and ages are welcome. No partner or dance experience necessary
